An example of a painting that I admire is ‘Holy Family with St. Francis in a Landscape’, which was painted by the legendary Giorgio Vasari in the year 1542. The painting depicts a mother holding a child, in glowing light. Behind them, Joseph and St. Francis are seen looking on from a background, which is darkened. Like in most of his other paintings, Giorgio uses the chiaroscuro perspective, and religious themes in this painting too. Chiaroscuro is a technique whereby light and dark colors are contrasted to create shadows and simulate a depth in paintings. The original painting is an oil painting on canvas. The composition of the painting is excellent. Everything seems to fit in place. No part of the painting looks awkwardly left out. Joseph and St. Francis emerge perfectly behind the mother holding her child. They provide a good background and do not conceal any detail of the mother and her baby. The painting is also quite symmetrical, although the left part of it appears to be a little raised. The painting is also calm, with movement not being depicted in any aspect. Giorgio does a good job at the focus of the painting. In this painting, the focus is definitely the mother holding her baby, with Joseph together with St. Francis in the background. The mother and her baby are painted distinctly with bright colors that grab the attention of an onlooker. The mother is also gracefully dressed, and instead of looking forward, looks down at her baby. This subconsciously draws an onlooker’s attention to what the mother is looking at, creating a balance between the mother and the baby. Joseph and St. Francis emerge from the background, but do so in a very subtle way. They also seem to be looking at the mother and her baby, drawing more focus to them. They do not cloud the main focus of the painting. Moreover, their faces are not very distinct, and the background behind them is darkened. Joseph is tactically painted wearing a dull-colored grey robe. To enhance the calmness of the painting, a clear sky is seen in the background, though it does not take up much space. The painter took into great detail the forms of everything that he painted. The four characters, for example, have been painted almost perfectly, and portray unmistakable human features. Every object is painted clearly, with as much detail as possible. The painting has been lauded as an artistic representation of familial love. Actually, one can almost feel the love in the painting. The mother tenderly holds her adorable baby. They are both looking each other in the eye, as if communicating a language that only they can comprehend. The baby’s face is also seen to be relaxed, with evidence of a smile across its face. The mother and her baby are under a glowing light, probably to symbolize protection. St. Francis and Joseph are seen taking a look from the back. Joseph is holding a cross, whereas St. Francis is holding a book. These two characters add a religious element to the painting. Their faces are also filled with genuine concern for the baby. Like most of Giorgio’s paintings, Holy Family with St. Francis in a Landscape carries a catholic theme. Most paintings during his period had religious themes. The cross brings an aspect of Catholicism into the painting. Paintings that would have a similar style, and relate to this one include, Madonna of the Rocks, by Leonardo da Vinci, or the Alba Madonna, by Raphael. These paintings display the same features as this one. Additionally, they were painted almost during the same time. History wise, Holy Family with St. Francis in a Landscape is a 16th century painting. It was a gift of the Ahmanson Foundation. Giorgio’s paintings, however, are very rare since he was mostly accustomed to painting huge walls of churches. This, nonetheless, was one of his best paintings. The mother and the child in the painting are often said to have been idealized by him. They were a creation from his own imagination.
