1. What role does personality play in leadership? Are there personality traits that make it impossible for certain leaders to exercise certain leadership strategies? Why is this significant to both leaders and followers? Various studies have attempted to identify stable qualities that distinguish leaders from non-leaders. For some, leadership reflects an identifiable personality attribute of the individual. For others, leadership activities are defined as being derived from stable individual qualities, mostly including personality traits, but other stable characteristics as well. Leadership has been conceptualized as a function of personality traits. For example, self-confidence improves one’s performance in a variety of tasks in leadership. According to Northouse, a leader who is self assured without being overbearing instills self-confidence in team members. Self-confidence is among the first leadership traits scholars identify and it currently receives considerable attention as a major contributor to leadership effectiveness. Although self confidence is a key leadership trait, so is humility. Humility as a personality trait enables leaders to admit for instance, one’s mistakes to team members and outsiders, as well as admitting that one cannot know or do everything alone. Good leadership comes entirely from traits of personality: selflessness, assertiveness, sense of humor, passion for people and work, among others. Surprisingly however, leaders do understand the role personality plays in their interactions with others. This limitation has a significant consequence since leaders lack insight about how their personality obstructs their effectiveness. 2. Historically, leadership has been described from various perspectives and defined by different concepts. Based on the descriptions of leadership provided in the readings, present a personal definition of leadership and explain why you believe your definition is appropriate The concept of leadership has co-existed with humanity, and been conventionally exemplified in a variety of life engagements, yet its definition remains elusive to many. Leadership is a phenomenon that resides in the context of the interactions between leaders and followers and as such, it can be observed in one’s behaviors, as well as learned. In my own understanding, leadership refers to that process of influencing one or more people in a positive way so that the tasks determined by the goals and objectives of an organization are accomplished.
